I watched and read quite a few DIYs to get this done. You can make a cardboard template to get them in the right spot. 2 holes are about half an inch forward from the single hole. We did cut out quite a bit toward the front. The 02J box fits the Jetta just fine, but you need to score the metal with a hacksaw or die grinder, and pound it out of the way. the plug on my new 02J tower was shot so I will be ordering a new plug.Ī good idea to change transmission oil when you have the tower out. Reverse sensor needs to be spliced together. We had to add some washers to the new bracket however because the bolts were bottoming out. I will be ordering one.Ĭable bracket from the 02J needs to be used I think because it looks a bit different but it fits the mounting points. Saved a ton of time I'm sure.Ġ2A shifter knob DOES NOT fit the 02J stick. We were able to drop the exhaust down by unbolting it midway, rather than disconnect the downpipe from the turbo. Cables look far better construction over the 02A. I have a lot of confidence in these componets. There are possibly some adjustments to be made but I'm not sure what those would actually be. Stiff and maybe a bit rough but plenty functionalfor my liking. Took it for a spin and let the transmission warm up a bit. Started snowing today but we just continued to work through it hence the wet engine. Box had all bushings replaced recently so I just left them in and saved the set I bought from Dieselgeek for a later date. Assembly looks decent with some rust in only a few spots. I used the short shifter from diesel geek and an assembly from ebay. Took a while (maybe a short day with 2 people) but overall wasn't that difficult.
#O2J POLO SHIFTER UPDATE#
Wanted to provide an update on this situation. I'm sure its fine but it would be nice to find something a bit newer/cleaner. There's a complete assembly here, although it looks fairly worn. Planning on getting the short shifter from dieselgeek as well as a bushing rebuild on the shifter box. Does the mk3 knob and boot still fit, or do i need to get the mk4 stuff? Looks like I need to drill 2 holes, find some longer bolts. I think soldering some steel tubing over the cable might be the best temporary fix available.Īs far as the 02J conversion, is there anything out of the ordinary i should know? Watched a few videos. Although no hardware store in town really sells the connector bit that I feel would actually work with that method. I will see if I can trim the sheath tomorrow to get the cable crimped. Getting someone to pull me back home is always an option I guess. I doubt I can get up it in 3rd, but maybe worth a shot. Unfortunately i live up a hill from where i am currently parked.
